How to care for hairless animals?

With the arrival of spring, the season of intensive care for our beloved pets begins. While owners of long-haired dogs and cats may anticipate shedding, those with hairless companions face unique challenges in grooming and maintenance.

According to Tauro Grooming Academy specialist Kamile Ausmane, the body's secretion of oils plays a crucial role in the care of hairless pets. "Contrary to popular belief that hairless breeds alleviate grooming concerns, they require dedicated attention due to the oil buildup on their skin. This can lead to clogged pores and the emergence of blackheads, necessitating a meticulous grooming regimen," explains Ausmane, who delves into the intricacies of caring for these special companions.

Why Bathe a Hairless Pet?

Hairless breeds like Sphynx cats or Mexican hairless dogs have a higher demand for heat, resulting in intensified oil production on their skin. This not only discomforts the pet but also poses a challenge for the owner.

"It's advisable to bathe hairless pets more frequently, tailoring the frequency to their individual needs. Over time, the accumulation of oils and dirt can lead to pore blockages. Additionally, without fur to absorb these oils, they directly impact the skin," shares Ausmane. "Regular bathing is crucial for preventing skin discomforts, including irritation, fungal infections, and acne."

Natural Care for Optimal Maintenance

"For exfoliating dead skin cells and unclogging pores, many hairless pet owners prefer gentle, pet-safe exfoliating shampoos. These products contain nourishing ingredients that restore the skin's moisture balance and preserve its elasticity," recommends the animal care specialist.

Ausmane emphasizes the importance of selecting shampoos with natural formulations, devoid of harmful chemicals like SLS, parabens, mineral oils, and silicones. "Ingredients such as castor oil and glycerin are renowned for their moisturizing properties, effectively hydrating the pet's skin. Jojoba oil, a natural antioxidant, soothes dry, irritated skin and shields it from environmental damage," she adds.

Wet wipes emerge as another indispensable hygiene tool, adept at gently cleansing the pet's skin, paws, and facial areas while neutralizing odors.

Prioritizing Eye and Ear Hygiene

Ausmane underscores the significance of maintaining eye hygiene, emphasizing that all pets, regardless of breed, require regular tear cleaning. "Alkaline multipurpose water such as Pure Mist serves as an excellent solution for eye care, skin cleansing, and addressing wrinkles. Since hairless pets lack protective fur, dirt and dust can irritate their eyes. Alkaline water not only cleanses but also discourages bacterial growth, creating an inhospitable environment for pathogens," she explains.

Ear care holds equal importance for hairless animals, given the absence of ear hair. Regular cleaning, especially post-bath, helps prevent the accumulation of dirt and sulfur. Ausmane also recommends using Pure Mist for gentle yet effective ear cleansing.

Nutrition as the Foundation of Health

"A balanced diet constitutes 80% of a pet's health regimen, with the remaining 20% dedicated to daily care. Achieving harmony between diet and care yields remarkable results in both appearance and well-being," summarizes Tauro Grooming Academy groomer Kamile Ausmane.
